Wrapping Up the 2018 Original Farmers' MarketNovember 1, 2018
The 2018 Original Farmers' Market season has come to an end, and what a season it was!
After 26 weeks of fresh Indiana grown produce, locally baked goods, homemade soaps, fresh cut flowers, lots of live music, and building a great sense of community, the Original Farmers' Market has concluded another season!
The downtown Indy farmers' market first returned to the Mile Square in 1997 and has taken place at the Indianapolis City Market ever since. We're proud to host and support Hoosier farmers and producers, local businesses, and Indy musicians, each Wednesday, May through October, and showing it all off to residents and tourists alike!
Through the Original Farmers' Market's Buy 2 Give 1 food gleaning program we collected nearly 3,000 lbs of fresh produce and, with the help of BlueIndy, donated it to downtown food shelters (the Wheeler Men's Mission, the Wheeler Center for Women and Children, and Horizon House). This program helps provide healthy, nutritious meals to those in the Indianapolis community who need them the most.
Through the 2018 season we continued to redeem SNAP/EBT benefits, and to offer market-goers utilizing these benefits the Fresh Bucks program. The Fresh Bucks program helps increase the spending power of those in the SNAP/EBT program, doubling their funds up to $10, to be spent on fresh, Indiana grown produce. Fresh Bucks not only helps put fresh produce into people's diets, it also helps support local Indiana farmers and gets money back into local economies! The Fresh Bucks program lost funding part-way through the season, but was fully funded for the remainder of the 2018 season by the City of Indianapolis!

We would like to thank all our vendors, Farm Bureau Insurance, Renewal By Andersen, The City of Indianapolis, Downtown Indy Inc., Visit Indy, IMPD, the Hoosier Farmers Market Association, the Farmers Market Coalition, and everyone in the Indianapolis community for making this farmers market possible.
